How to be a Botox babe (without the whole world knowing about it!)

Let’s face it, Botox is part of life no matter how hard you try to deny it. Whether it’s dodgy mask looking faces of certain celebs or your local hairdresser that looks a bit fresher than normal. It has become a part of our culture. And I’ll choose this point to say I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!

Origins in a Sausage

Believe it or not Botulinum toxin (the real name for Botox) has been around for a very long time. Let’s look way back to The 1820s and Dr. Justinus Kerner’s “wurstgift”. “Wurstgift” Is German for sausage poison. (Not something you tag the Xmas socks your granny bought for you!) It came to light when Dr. Kerner began to study a batch of poorly prepared blood sausages. They were responsible for the death of several dozen Germans. Kerner found that something within the sausages was responsible for the deaths.

Being either brave or stupid, Kerner decided to inject himself with some of the risky sausage and gave himself botulism. (Luckily without the disastrous outcome of the people that ate the sausages!) This led to a better understanding of food borne botulism and paved the way for treatment/prevention of deadly food poisoning and eventually, production of the safe type of Botox we have today.

How Botox is Useful (The Science Bit)

Cosmetic Botox has become increasingly popular since the early 2000’s when celebrities started admitting they had treatment and how it changed their lives.

Despite what you may be led to believe, Botox isn’t a wrinkle remover. It is a protein molecule and actually works by blocking proteins in the end of a nerve cell once it’s injected into a muscle. This in turn stops the muscle from contracting. In the case of the muscles in the face, it stops the skin over the muscle from ‘creasing’, which leads to a reduction of lines/wrinkles. Pretty amazing, right?

Stuff you didn’t know Botox could do…

Botox has many uses besides reducing facial wrinkles. It can be used under the arms to reduce hyperhydrosis, a condition that causes excessive sweating. Not only that, Botox can be used to treat migraines as well as help reduce over used muscles in the jaw caused by teeth grinding.

Don’t wait until you look like a shar-pei before you start

Although there is not a minimum age range, its best to start thinking about embarking on Botox when you start to notice fine lines/wrinkles that bother you, rather than waiting until they are really deep. Once those lines are deeper and more established, it usually requires more treatments like dermal fillers to reduce the lines.

What you need to know before you start

To really be a Botox babe, there are some things that you need to make sure before you have it done.

  1. Find out what product is being used. There are lots of different brands of Botox, some contain animal products and even lactose so if you’re vegetarian or suffer with a lactose allergy, this is pretty important for the person doing your treatment to know!
  2. Make sure you have filled in a medical form. THIS IS IMPORTANT! For reasons I just mentioned as well as for your practitioner to know if you are suitable for treatment.
  3. Tell your practitioner if you have had it before. What you liked/what you didn’t like – this helps tailor the treatment around YOU and YOUR face.
  4. BE PATIENT!!!! This is a big one! Botox takes 2 weeks to “kick in” so you won’t notice any changes straight away. Have a cuppa, put your feet up and wait for the magic to begin!

And Finally…

If you think now is the time to have Botox then go for it! As long as you are comfortable with your practitioner and have got all the information you need, it’s a case of biting the bullet and going for it! Once you have had it done I’m sure when you feel it starting to wear off you won’t even think twice about rebooking! 😉 Oh, and if there’s any reason why it’s not for you, results are not permanent and your face will go back to exactly how it was before you had it done if you don’t keep up with it.
