Sunscreen shouldn’t just be limited to hot summer days!
So, the weather has been pretty great over the last few weeks and that makes me hopeful that this summer will be a scorcher!
But did you know that your skin needs sun protection, even if the sun isn’t beating right down on you?
Believe it or not, the damaging rays of the sun come through even on cloudy days, even through your windows! This is why you may have heard you need to be wearing sun protection even in winter- yes its true! Sunscreen shouldn’t just be limited to hot summer days or the beach.
Why is it so important to wear sunscreen, even in Winter?
I am going to shed some light (no pun intended!) on why you need sunscreen and why your future self will thank you for it, with my 5 top reasons why you need sunscreen.
1. Sunscreen protects you from premature ageing
Now, you may have heard this before, but using a sun block especially on your face, protects you from the harmful rays that can cause premature ageing. Top tip: look for protection with both UVA and UVB protection, as this is the one that blocks both types of rays from damaging your skin.
What is the best sunscreen? My absolute favourite is this broad spectrum soft focus veil from Arbonne, because it feels so light and moisturising and has a slight tint to it! Perfect for when you don’t want to be having foundation that’s melting off in the sun! It works great under makeup too, if you do like more coverage

2. Sunscreen helps prevent skin discolouration (pigmentation) as a result of sun damage
The UV rays from the sun actually cause the cells in your skin (called melanocytes) to produce colour called melanin. This doesn’t always happen evenly so you can be left with sun spots AKA liver spots and freckles. When you use a broad-spectrum sunscreen/sunblock, the rays are deflected off your skin and the melanocytes are not triggered to overproduce – how awesome is that?!
3. Sunscreen protects you from skin diseases like cancer
When you use a good sunscreen, the chances of getting skin cancer are reduced significantly. Research shows that the risk can be lowered as much as 40 – 50%! That means that when you are not using sunscreen, you are putting your skin at a higher risk, for no real reason at all! Be smart and safe use a sunscreen DAILY!

4. Sunscreen helps to maintain healthy skin texture
We now know that not using proper sun protection leads to premature skin ageing. This is linked with skin texture too. The rays of the sun are known as free radicles. Simply put, free radicles are particles that get into your skin and start damaging your DNA from the inside. This can take a while to notice on the surface of the skin but over time it can show up as dry, leathery skin. Lets face it, NOBODY wants that!
5. You’ll need less makeup to cover up imperfections
When your skin is healthy from the inside, it shows! Sunscreen is a wonder skin ingredient that I feel isn’t shouted about enough in terms of making your skin look good. It is the first thing I advise all my clients to introduce into their skin care regime. When the skin is healthy, you don’t need to cover it up as much with thick makeup that can sometimes cause other problems like spots and blemishes.

So, there you have it. I hope this has helped you realise why daily sun screen is so important, especially on your face!
